In an ever expanding and globalised world this postgraduate conference proposes to open a dialogue between the Far East, the Middle East and the West, and to explore themes of cultural exchange between Asia and the West in an inter-disciplinary forum. It aims to bring together postgraduate students and young scholars working in various disciplines. Researchers are invited to submit proposals for papers representing original and ongoing research that addresses cross-cultural exchanges and encounters in the Arts and Humanities. These may include, but are not restricted to, the disciplines of art history, museum and gallery studies, craft and design, photography, literature, social anthropology and history. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to:
Western/Asian responses to Asian/Western art (including painting, sculpture, architecture, photography, design, literature, music etc.);
Picturing international trade and wars in the art of Asia and Europe/America;
Comparative studies of art institutions and policy in the East and West;
Anglo-Chinese-Japanese cultural exchanges; and
Internationalism, Globalisation and Colonialism in the arts.

Papers will be allocated 30 minutes, including 20 minutes for their presentation and 10 minutes for discussion, and will be organised into panels comprising three to four presenters with a discussant to encourage debate.

Selected papers will be considered for publication in Inferno, the University of St Andrews Postgraduate Journal of Art History and Museum Studies.

Abstract Submission
A 250 word abstract should be submitted electronically before 31 May 2009.
